Removing Northern Ireland from EU VAT validation

Improvement

System One has integrated tools to help people with EU bookkeepings understand if they should charge VAT or not.

Brexit has changed and complicated these business rules quite a bit. For instance,  Northern Irish companies can have both a UK VAT and a EU VAT number. This number can be used for trading goods.

However, EU VAT rules on services no longer apply to Northern Ireland. Since the majority of the transactions from System One concern services, we've decided to remove Northern Ireland as a VIES country.

This has the consequence that VAT numbers for Northern Irish companies:

  • are all marked as outside the EU
  • will no longer be re-formatted in the EU VAT number format
  • won't be checked for their validity in the VIES database
